One should experience a photograph rather than merely view it.

A successful image is one that extends beyond a basic record of events. It reaches into us and pulls some part of us to the surface, urging us to explore, think, learn, understand. And at its very best, an image changes us in some important way.

It is deeply rewarding to visually document a fragment of our shared human narrative.

Jo Gravely is a freelance photographer living in the Ithaca, New York area.

As a Roy H. Park Fellow, she received a Master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which included coursework at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.

Jo’s work spans non-profit and corporate projects, documentary weddings, and editorial and promotional assignments.
